Fishing Report from the Ultra Grand Slam 11/15/02 The sailfish have finally shown up off the waters of Key West. Fish ranging from 7 to 50 pounds are being caught on trolled Ballyho from 100 feet to 240 feet outside the reef. These fish make for great action and spectacular jumps using 20 lb spin tackle and light conventional reels. It is not uncommon for them to leap into the air 15 to 20 times during a fight using this type of light tackle. Also good catches of blackfin tuna, a few wahoo's and king mackeral are beginning to show up as well. Also great catches of yellowtail snapper and black grouper are being caught on the reef edge. Seas have been relatively calm which makes for a great way to fight these fish while standing up on light tackle. Expect this type of fishing to continue through Christmas. in the coming months you can expect excellent mackerel fishing and other reef species to continue along with excellent big shark fishing which is really exciting! |
